February 2017 Laura Ingalls Wilder Events

February tends to be bad time for Laura Ingalls Wilder events since in the northern part of the country tends to have event cancelling weather, but many people buck the weather and try anyway for local events. (Would it have killed Laura to be born in May? LOL) Here are the ones on my radar.

February 2014 Laura Ingalls Wilder Events

I really can’t stress enough that it’s NOT a good idea to schedule an event on Laura’s birthday if you live in the Midwest. I’ve faced cancellations or near misses of storms every single year I’ve tried. That’s why I now do the On-Air Birthday Party instead, everyone can stall home and safe and still participate, but some people in warmer climes and some more inclined to throw caution to the wind do have events in honor of Laura’s birthday on Feb. 7th.

The big one is the Gingerbread Sociable in warm and sunny central California. The Pomona Public Library in Pomona California has hosted an annual Gingerbread Sociable in their Laura Ingalls Wilder Children’s Room every year since 1967. Although the event has simplified and grown smaller over the years, it continues the tradition. The on-going budget issues in California threatened the library with closing in 2012, but a one year fix to borrow money from their street fund to keep it open seems to be holding. I always hope next year I’ll be there. This year they were a little early and they held it on Feb. 2, 2014.

Longmont, Colorado is hosting an event featuring Wilder expert Bill Anderson. “Celebrate the February birthdays of America’s favorite pioneers: Laura Ingalls & Almanzo Wilder. Stories and crafts from 6 to 7 p.m.; Award-winning biographer, Bill Anderson’s program and autographs from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Best for families with school-age children and Little House readers of all ages. Signup at the CATS Desk or call 303-651-8477.”

In Iowa City, Bill’s Uptown Cafe (the inspiration for the Mickey Rooney movie Bill) is hosting it’s third annual Laura’s birthday fiddle event. “Saturday Night Music at the coffee house (Feb. 8). Come celebrate Laura Ingalls Wilder’s birthday with local old-time duo Marc & Brandi Janssen! The story of the Ingalls family would not be complete without the accompaniment of Pa’s fiddle, so we’ll share a few of the tunes and songs from Laura’s childhood along with readings from the Little House book series. Bring the whole family! (Find out more about Marc and Brandi at www.theprairiefiddle.com.) Show starts at 7 pm. Suggested cover is $5, but feel free to contribute more.”

There may be a Laura birthday event closer to you, check your local libraries and museums. Otherwise join me for Laura’s On-Air Birthday Party this Friday at 8 PM CT:
