An old Iowa tradition of competitive hand corn husking is being revived in the Amana Colonies this fall. The “Iowa Hand Cornhusking Competition” is being held at the Amana Colonies RV Park and Event Center, October 13, 2012.
Henry Wallace invented the sport when he held the first contest on Dec. 8, 1922. This competition is for the whole family, classes are:
- Youth Boys 14 and Under
- Youth Girls 14 and Under
- Youth Boys 15-20
- Youth Girls 15-20
- Young Men’s 21-49
- Young Women’s 21-49
- Men’s Senior 50-74
- Women’s Senior 50-74
- Men’s Golden Agers 75 and up
- Women’s golden Agers 75 and up
Special features are an evening banquet, food available on grounds, hand corn shelling demos, kids’ corn play box, Minneapolis-Moline display, and plowing demonstrations on Sunday. This event is free and open to the public. Registration deadline for the competition is October 1st.
