August 2013 Laura Ingalls Wilder Events

August is another busy month for Laura Ingalls Wilder fans.

Little OOPS on the Prairie – Blue Belle Inn – St. Ansgar, IA – August 2-3, 2013
I’ve had the pleasure of staying in the Anne’s House of Dreams room and touring the rest which are all dedicated to children’s literature themes, including Plum Creek. But in addtion for a short run discover a fractured fairy tale style “whodunit” murder mystery by published author and innkeeper Sherrie Hansen.

Carrie Ingalls Birthday – Keystone, SD – August 3, 2013
This event is usually held on Carrie’s birthday every year and features the museum being open, birthday cake, and other events. I didn’t get a response to be query whether they would be doing it this year, but I assume they are.

Laura Ingalls Wilder Days – Genesee Country Village & Museum – Mumford, NY – August 3-4, 2013
GCVM is a well respected living history site. They have three areas that interpret from 1795 to 1920. I haven’t made it to this event and haven’t heard a lot so I can’t give any details.

5th Harvey Dunn Plein Air Event – Ingalls Homestead – De Smet, SD – August 9, 10, 11, 2013
In honor of Grace’s nephew by marriage, famous artist (he has his own stamp) Harvey Dunn the Harvey Dunn Society in conjunction with the Ingalls Homestead offers an event where artists register for a spot to create art in the out of doors. The product must be produced on site and then it is offered for sale. You might have noticed paintings from previous years around De Smet, some are very impressive. I haven’t made it to this one, but it’s on my life goals list.

  1. Sarah, thanks for your weekly updates. Here’s another update: Dean Butler, who you know played Almanzo in the “Little House on the Prairie” TV series, will be a special guest at the 2013 Wilder Festival on September 21, in Mansfield, MO.
